RINLA offers many opportunities for people looking for careers in green industry. Visit our workforce website Growing Futures RI where you can find a wealth of information about our workforce program, our job board, or sign up to receive information on upcoming training sessions and other opportunities.

In response to our members stating that the Number 1 problem facing agriculture and plant-based industry is the lack of young trained individuals entering into the workforce, RINLA applied for Real Jobs Rhode Island planning and implementation grants to develop and register the first in the nation multi-employer registered apprenticeship program for agriculture and plant-based industry. This first consolidated effort to identify workforce needs of the green industry develops a well-articulated career lattice that includes training opportunities.

On February 28, 2018, RINLA’s Multi-employer Registered Apprenticeship was approved by the state’s Apprenticeship Council. RINLA’s long-term goal is to develop pathways linking a pre-apprenticeship training program to an apprenticeship program and to a 2-year degree horticulture program and/or a 4-year degree program for those interested in pursuing higher education. All of this will lead to job placement and career opportunities with living wages as well as opportunities for entrepreneurship for new industry entrants.

The 2-year degree program began at CCRI in the fall of 2022. Learn more about this program and how to apply at our Growing Futures RI website or view the CCRI Catalog about this program.

What is a Registered Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is structured employment (on-the-job learning) combined with job-related classroom instruction, designed and driven by employers, to create an “earn while you learn” pathway.

How does Registered Apprenticeship differ from internship?

An internship is temporary “work” experience, often unpaid or without established expectations.
A Registered Apprenticeship is paid employment that leads to a career.
